To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

In the conferences of the Unitarian Association the speaker who most impressed me was the Bev. Sylvester Judd A DUSKY LYDIA 121 of Angasta, Me. He was the apostle of a new idea among Unitarians, — the birthright church. My intimacy with the Quakers had made this idea f amiliar, and my ideal church was already one to which every child belonged. It was a joy to listen to Judd's pleading for the general adoption by min- isters of the principle that children should be members of their congregations
... without need of christening, and their faith associated in every child's mind with its innocent gaie- ties. Sylvester Judd's face was of exceeding beauty ; he had a light clear complexion, blue eyes, and flaxen hair ; intellect and kindly feeling were blended in his expression ; his cheeks were mirrors to the glow of his enthusiasm, his voice sympa- thetic with his thought ; and there was about his moutii and eyes an infantine expression that rendered the great brow almost a surprise. Judd was an incarnation of the benedic- tion on little children.
