Owing, however, to the situation of the town in the midst of a great mineral district the iron trade may be said to be the staple industry ; and several large machine- making, iron-founding, and hydraulic engineering establish- ments have been set up. In 1858 the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company transferred to Kil- marnock their large engineering shops, which supply nearly the whole of their system with locomotives, carriages, and waggons. Fire-clay goods and sanitary ware are extensiv...ely made in the vicinity. At Irvine, too, the trade is of a varied character. Here, there is considerable activity in ship-building, coach-building, engineering, and metal-casting. But the prosperity of the town is due in no small degree to the impulse received from the establishment of two extensive chemical works for the manufacture of bichromate of potash and alkali.
In the smaller towns the manufacture of textile fabrics may be considered the principal. At Catrine and at Patna there are extensive cotton works.
