Messrs. Edmund Dwight, of Boston, Jonathan Dvvight, of Springfield, Henry Dvvight, of Geneva, and the sons of Jonathan, were men of high honor, great sagacity and large wealth. Their investments in western banks, at Buffalo, Cleveland, Massillon, Monroe and Detroit amounted to millions. They never borrowed a dollar from these banks, and when the time of trial came, after the suspension of 1837, they endeavored to preserve their escutcheon free from the taint of failure by ad- vancing large sums..., (to the Bank of Michigan three hundred thousand dollars); and yet these gentlemen were stigmatized by the anti-bank people as robbers. I feel that this avowal is due to their memory.
All went well with the Bank of Michigan until the apple of temptation came in the form of the deposits of the public moneys. The local banks were flattered with their appointment, and were urged by the Secretary of the Treasury to show their ability to perform the office of a United States Bank, by lending the public money and making it plenty among the people.
