Thomas Vivares was born in London about 1735, as one of a family of thirty-one ! He had already gained recognition by his talents when ...Bartolozzi reached England, and between 1764 and 1788 was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy and Society 66 BARTOLOZZI of Artists. Bartolozzi himself exclaimed of him : " Vivares ! He is the finest landscape engraver in the world ; his needle paints upon the copper — so light, so full of taste, and so airy ! His skies are in motion. I esteemed it an honour to engrave the figures in his landscapes. " He referred most probably here to the Italian peasant's vi^edding, a print of which now lies before me.
