In front of Hooker's lines was a thick undergrowth of scrub-oaks, vines, and ragged bashes skirting a mul- titude of ponds arid marshes. Tliis swampy wilder- ness was from four to six hundred yards wide, and beyond stretched an open field of eighty rods in width.
