XRD 1818-1851 Dr. Xifhols Hard was descended from a long line of educated ancestors who had lived in the state of New York. He was one of four brothers, each of whoin studied medicine, and three of whom were among the ablest prac- titioners in northern Illinois during their lifetime. Nichols Hard was born July 4, 1818, probably at Geneva. New York. While his sons were still young, the father, Peter Nichols Hard, moved froin New York to Grass Lake near Dexter, Mich. , where he was drowned in 1837. Thrown on his own resources when 18 years of age, Nichols matriculated in the Medical College of Ohio at Cincinnati in 1839, and graduated from that school in 1841. When 22 years old. One week after his graduation, he began a journey by boat from Cincinnati to New Orleans.
