Yet with it all it was an interesting experience. When I try to focus my mind on the many and varied scenes I witnessed, they stand out against a large white background of snow and woods. On this background, then, there appear gradually in my mind's eye smaller details of men, transports and animals ; thousands and thousands of Russian prisoners, and long sinister processions of am- bulance sleighs crawling along, sometimes over tracks that were called roads only by courtesy.
