Secretary of State 9 On is'ovember 6, 1915, the Uzzell Building, in which were stored many Su2:)reme Court Reports, was destroyed by fire. In this fire were burned 47,161 volumes of Supreme Court Reports and about 20,000 volumes of Laws and miscellaneous books belonging to the State. The value of these Supreme Court Reports and other books was more than $80,000.
In addition to the books above mentioned, there were many mis- cellaneous ]>apers and much property, etc., belonging to the State that
... were destroyed.
The last General Assembly was strongly urged to provide a fire- proof storage warehouse for these books and other State property.
In the basement of the new State Building are now stored all the Supreme Court Reports, about 81,000 volumes, and about 1,800 volumes of Laws belonging to the State. These books are so crowded on the floor for want of proper space that it is almost impossible to keep up with them accurately, and care for and protect them as they should be cared for. All of this space is greatly needed by the State Library, which is now using part of this basement.
