Johnston commenced professional life as a Common- wealth's Attorney, but was soon sent by the people of Tazewell County to represent them in the State Senate. In 1869 he became Judge of the Circuit Court of Washington County circuit, but 8o FLOYD BIOGRAPHICAL GENEALOGIES was soon called to serve his people in the Senate of the United States. He achieved distinction in the Senate and, by successive elections, was kept in that service until a short time before his death, in 1890.
