He related that he had cut his leg and the physician upon whom he called to sew it up made such a bungling job of it that he vowed he would never have anything to do with doctors again, and he has scrupulously kept his vow. He re- garded doctors as humbugs ; was in the habit of going to bed early, and getting up at five o'clock.
He used to weigh 144 pounds when young, and butch- ered hogs with the best of them. He was a shoerciaker by trade, and also a farmer and lumber merchant.
