He was elected a member of the House of Eepresentative from Marion county in 1856 and 1858, and during the latter term was twice chosen Speaker. In 1860 he joined the Ninth Indiana Volunteers in the rebel- lion and was promoted to the major ship of the Eleventh United States Infantry, in which capacity he served his country until 1864. He again began the practice of law in 116 LEGISLATIVE.
