Thickening- Materials Employed in the Printing" of Calico.— Under the name of thickeners are understood such preparations as are- added along with the colouring matters in order to give them the necessary amount of consistency to allow them to be printed on the required parts in order to produce the patterns without being liable to run or pass beyond their proper limit. The part played by the thickening is simply a mechanical one and has nothing to do with the fixing of the colours ; there is, however, one exception to this in the case of albuminous substances, which act as fixers of the colours as well as thickeners.
