It was by the ascent of this river that the great soldier made his first attempt to get in the rear of Vicksburg, and only when defeated in this, that he tried to cut a canal across the peninsula in front of the city; and failing in that also, that he formed the daring resolu- tion to run the gauntlet of the Confederate batteries, and finally succeeded in getting the transports for his army at the point where he wished them, a long distance below the city.
