We left Cape Town on January 9, 1892, and arrived at Kimberley on the llth. The journey is very beautiful going through the Karroo desert. The scenery is lovely : you see whole fields of arum lilies and all kinds of coloured flowers, masses of them, hedges of geraniums and wonderful w r hite roses, with snow-clad mountains to close the view. Kimberley is a very uninteresting, flat place in the middle of the veldt. Almost the only attraction is its wonderful diamond mines and the curious big hol...e, as deep as a large house is high I forget how wide w r hich marks the spot where they dug out the first diamonds before the machinery came. We played there four w r eeks. I found that the chief engineer of the De Beers mine, Louis Seymour, was a distant cousin of mine, and that his wife was also 171 Both Sides of the Curtain connected through another branch of the family. This made an additional attraction for me.
While there, Mr. Vernon was stricken with Cape fever, and when his son told me I sent him some aconite.
