IS/ sity " of such a balance, as Coleridge believes ; or that he designed to show the effect of "a great deed enjoined on an inferior mind, " as Goethe affirms, this seems to me to be making Shakespeare drive a shaft for the water of life into the plain of the mere understanding, whence no rich poetic current could gain mo- mentum to gush ; a procedure, is it not, I ask in all deference to these two great poets and critics, inconsistent with high aesthetic prin- ciples, principles which both of themselves have done much to establish by precept as by prac- tice.
