He was proceeding to Deli to be a clerk in a tobacco-plantation at a place which, as afterwards transpired, was within measurable distance of Tek Chiu's field of labour. Hopeful's grandfather had, half a century earlier than his grand- son's recital of the story, left the city of Even Way in Fokien, China, and found a home in Penang, the island of the betel-nut.
