When coiled basketry is well made, especially with the splint foundation, it will hold liquids without difficulty. In some areas where basket-ware took the place and filled the uses of earthen-ware, the natives lined the insides of their baskets with pitch, gum, or some other adhesive and coating substance ; but the Salish coiled basketry was so beautifully made that it would hold water without any assistance of this kind.
