Dr. Sterrett generously relinquished his own plans, and returning to Athens devoted himself with great fidelity to the interests of the School until May, 1884. He then joined Mr. W. M. Ramsay at Smyrna, which had been agreed upon as the starting-point of an archaeological journey to be made in Asia Minor during the following summer. Dr. Sterrett had been a member of the School during 1 882-1 883, and his experience enabled him to be of much service to the two students who were members during th...e second year. By his own example of untiring work, and by his willingness to render aid in every possible way, he did much to make good the loss which they sustained in consequence of the protracted illness of the Director. Toward the end of October Professor Packard was prostrated by an attack of fever, and from this he recov- ered very slowly. He was confined to the house until the end of January, and after this he had not the strength to direct the work of the School except by occasional advice.
