After thirty years of British rule there are scarcely any roads in the country outside of the chief towns. The only railways are the narrow-gauge line to Prome, a hundred and sixty odd miles long, opened in 1877, and another of nearly the same length to Toung- oo, opened eight years later, and therefore no

According to the Ad- ministration Report on Indian Railways for 1883-84, the line to Prome during the four years ending in 1883 yielded an average profit per annum of 4*63 per cent, on the capital expended, notwithstanding that the line prac- tically follows the course of the Irrawaddy river, and has to compete with the fine and well-served Flotilla Company's steamers. To Toung-oo there is no opposition of this kind. The river journey is a tedious matter of four- teen days, and the road is a mere jungle path.
