The Old Hermitage was a small hotel managed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department. It was a comfortable^ one-storied building, made of " cob " — a mix- ture of clay and grass — boarded inside, and with an outer casing made of corrugated iron. It was the first house built in New Zealand for the accommodation of climbers and has been a delight to many visitors ; during the last few years it has proved far too smaJl, and in 1912 a big hotel was being built on a better site, a mile away from the old one.
