The expense of work done on alley or subdivision street cross- ings shall be assessed upon the lots fronting upon such alley or subdivision streets on each side thereof, in all directions, halfway to the next street, place or court, on either side, respectively, or to the end of such alley or subdivision street, if it does not meet another; provided that lots and lands more than three hundred feet from such crossing on such alley or subdi- vision street shall not be assessed therefor.
