THE change of the name of the school which Dr. Mateer had founded and nurtured for nearly two decades was made at the formal request of the members of the Shantung Presbyterian Mission, sent to the Board imder date of February 14, 1881. It was accompanied by a "plan," and that part of the paper was as foUows: I. That the Tengchow Boys' High School be or- ganized ...into and constituted a college, to be called "The CoUege of Shantung." II. That it be carried on and governed by a board of six trustees nominated by the Shantung Mission, and confirmed by the Board of Foreign Missions.
III. That the college embrace a six years' course of study in Chinese classics, general science, and Christian ethics; including particularly "The Four Books" and "Five Classics," Chinese history, with Biblical and general history, mathematics, physical, mental and moral sciences, evidences of Christianity, and so forth.
