Shati-jam (Sidi Ali in Asiat. Soc, Beng. V. 466) ; the modern Bengali Chatganv, and our cor- rupted Chi...ttagong. The usual etymology is Chatur- grama = tetrapolis, which Mr. Monier Williams (Sansk. Diet. ) translates "name of a country. " Ibn Batutah's' Sutirkawan (Satagong), or Sadkawan (Satgong), was on the Hoogly or Western arm of the Ganga-Bramhaputra delta : Chittagong lay to the East of the Oriental em- bouchure, where the Portuguese placed their Porto Grande. I The latter in 1666 was named Islamabad.
The part of India most noticed in The Lusiads is naturally the Western Coast connected with Albuquerque's Goa.
