James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, was bom on the 2d of April, 1759, in the county of West- moreland, Virginia.
His parents, Spencer Monroe and Elizabeth Jones, descended from the first families of that State. He entered the college of William and Mary, but left his collegiate stu...dies before he had graduated, for the purpose of joining the Standard of his Country, which he did in his eighteenth year, and hastened to JAMES MONROE.

He was in many conflicts in the campaign of 1776, and was severely wounded in the battle of Trenton. During the cam- paigns of 1777, and 1778, he acted as aia to Lord Stirling, and distinguished himself in many battles, displaying great cour- age and coolness on the bloody fields of Brandywine, German- 127 128 JAMES MONROE.
