How we were spoiled! Special pieces of horse were cooked for us and in the morning all the hot cakes we could eat. I can tell you we were thankful for something hot after the long hours standing in the mud and doling out " one cigar, two squares of chewing tobacco and one pack of ' ^ THE ARGONNE 141 cigarettes apiece " to hundreds upon hundreds of men. They hadn't had a thing in two weeks and the line in front of the Y looked a mile long !

About dusk they marched into Recicourt and we stood at the entrance to the town waiting, our hearts in our mouths. Many rumors had pre- ceded them, tales of horror unmentionable, and we wondered how many of those we had come to know and love would file past and how many lay " out there " in that ghastly stretch of shell torn land.
Suddenly there was a stir. Around a bend in the road came the first column of troops. Hun- dreds, thousands of men passed us. Some we recognized and some we never would know again as the young lads who had marched so gayly into their first fight.
