This Norman minster was one of the in- stances of divided possession that is, of two churches in one building. At Carlisle it probably arose in this way : Walter the Norman and the secular canons who came with him, or followed him, and afterwards the Austin canons, undertook the ecclesias- tical organisation of the rebuilt city and of the district.
