KAULBACH, Wilhelm von. German; born 1805 at Arolsen, Westphalia; di...ed 1874 at Munich, where he had settled 142 Digitized by Google KAULBACH — KENSETT in 1825. Pupil of the DUsseldorf Academy under Cor- nelius and the Munich Academy; worked in Rome and in Berlin.
K161 CRUSADERS BEFORE JERUSALEM. (The first S. E. crusade reached Jerusalem June 7, 1099. The picture Stairway follows Tasso's description in Jerusalem Delivered.) In the center is a shrine carried by white-robed acolytes preceded by priests. The commander, Godefroy de Bouillon, mounted on a white horse, offers the crown of the Holy Land to Christ who appears above; among the crusaders at the right are Boemund and Tancredi, Peter the Hermit kneels in the foreground, and at the left are Armida and her knight Rinaldo.
