For its publication, it is well known, the author was sentenced by the Star-Chamber to pay a fine of £5,000 to the King, to be degraded from his profession of the law, and to lose his ears in the pillory. The severity of this sentence has been accounted for from the fact that Prynne, in his severe st...rictures against " Women Actors," is supposed to have reflected on Queen Henrietta, who it appears had performed in some Court Masque.
In it he quote 55 Synods and Councils, 71 Fathers, 150 Catholic and Protestant authors, 40 Heathen Philosophers, besides very nu- merous other writers.
1540 Prynne. The Re-Publicans and other Spurious Good Old Cause, briefly and truly anatomized to preserve our native country, kingdom, legal government, church, parliament, laws, liberties, privileges of parliament and Protestant Religion from ruine, scandal and perpetual infamy, to reform, reclaim all Jesuits, ridden, seduced Republicans, officers, soldiers, sectaries, heretofore or now engaged in the prosecution of this misintituled good old cause, from any future pursute thereof and engage them forever to abominate it, as apparently tending to publike ruin, their own temporal and enter- nal condemnation, infamy, our religious reproach in present and succeeding ages.
