August 30, 1827, Columbian Engine Company was organized, with William B. Birdsall as foreman, Nathaniel Bedle assistant foreman, Wm. H. Steel secretary, Wm. H. Powell treasure^- and Nathaniel Williams steward. This was the nucleus of the present effi- cient Fire Department. The appara- tuses were moved from place to place by hand, later by horses and now by motor engines built in as component parts of the apparatus.
