At Johnstown, barring their com- munication witti the eastern portion of the province, lay Sir Jithn and Colonel Guy Johnson, with five hundred Eoman Catholic Scotch Hig;hlanders, Tories to the core ; all along their northern frontier stretched Canada, whose loyalty to England was never doubted. Water communication on the east and on the west laid them open to the incursions of the foe, while in their midst dwelt an enemy of equal numbers with their own, whose weapons of war were the torch, the tomahawk and scalping knife.
