The argument runs that we have democracy, we have introduced free markets, and what are you doing? You are treating us as outsiders. We still don't belong. So we want to join NATO. But why do you extend NATO to areas of Eastern Europe which we do not menace and which indeed we had liberated from the Nazis?
I think expansion of NATO would be a self-fulfilling prophecy in that it would play directly into the hands of the nationalists.
