There were two or three men, an elderly woman in a motor veil, and several pretty, sunburnt girls. It was evident that they had all just returned from some interesting and exciting expedition.

Miss Jennings' shyness and good manners were forgotten completely as she listened — a flagrant eavesdropper — to the conversation of her neighbours ; but they were all far too much absorbed in their subject to notice the open-eyed, open-mouthed, and open-eared little woman in the corner.
After a time another girl, with a tennis racket in her hand, came up the steps on to the veranda and joined the group ; and then the plates of cake and glass dishes of jam were pushed to one side, so that the trophies of the excavators might be spread out for the new-comer's inspection.
