Maclise described the actors as " splendid strollers," and Forster avers that they richly deserved the term. The performances took place at Manchester on July 26th, and at Liver- pool two days later, the total receipts being about ;^900. Dickens, with his usual consideration in a charitable cause, earnestly desired to supplement the fund by writing a history of the trip a la Mrs. Gamp, to be illustrated by the artist-members of this benevolent fraternity ; but, after a few pages had been penned..., the matter dropped, o^ng mainly to the artists failing to carry out their share of the undertaking. Early in the summer Dickens removed from i68 CHABLES DICKENS ' [BROADaTAiiu Brighton to Broadstairs, which remained his head- quarters until the autumn, and his own home at Devonshire Terrace being then available, he joyfully took possession of it. We are told that his port- manteau fell ofF the cart during conveyance from the railway-station ; but happily the manuscript of an unfinished chapter of "Dombey** was not in it: " Whenever I travel,** he said, " and have anything of that valuable article [/.^., unpublished manuscript], I always carry it in my pocket." The bag, however, contained " on a moderate calculation jQ'jo worth of clothes," so that he had " no shirt to put on," and was obliged to send out for a barber to shave him !
