Early in the summer Dickens removed from i68 CHABLES DICKENS ' [BROADaTAiiu Brighton to Broadstairs, which remained his head- quarters until the autumn, and his own home at Devonshire Terrace being then available, he joyfully took possession of it. We are told that his port- manteau fell ofF the cart during conveyance from the railway-station ; but happily the manuscript of an unfinished chapter of "Dombey** was not in it: " Whenever I travel,** he said, " and have anything of that valuable article [/.^., unpublished manuscript], I always carry it in my pocket." The bag, however, contained " on a moderate calculation jQ'jo worth of clothes," so that he had " no shirt to put on," and was obliged to send out for a barber to shave him !
