He said he had been told of the scandal, but had dismissed it from his mind. He asked whether I had proof of actual infidelity. He read a paper on which I had transcribed copies of Pall Mall paragraph, May 14th, 1886; he expressed great sympathy and much grief. Finally he asked whether a separation deed could not be arranged. I said it would be useless. He begged me to give him time. To this I agreed.
