Suppose, for example, that 2 grams of a gas occupy i litre at o, and that the temperature is raised to 273. The absolute temperature is here doubled, and the volume, being directly proportional to the absolute tem- perature, is also doubled, or becomes 2 litres. I litre of the gas now contains only I gram, or the weight of i litre has been reduced to one -half by doubling the absolute temperature.
