The probation law of 1900 was repealed by a new law enacted in 1906, which was revised in 1922. 45 The present probation law states that the judge or judges of the courts of common pleas in and for each county are authorized and empowered, if in their judgment the interests of justice will be pro- moted thereby, to appoint as chief probation officer one probation officer to perform the duties as defined in the law, under direction of the court.
