Kwang-tung, or Canton. This province stretches along the south coast from the middle of the northern shore of the gulf of Tonquin, to nearly opposite the island of Formosa. It is thus a province of great length; but its breadth is irregular, and, in some places not very great. Toward the west, a narrow stripe of it ex- tends westward between Kwang-se and the bay of Ton- quin ; and it is also narrow toward the eastern part, the widest part is that watered by the Canton River, along which the roa...d crosses the Mei-ling mountains to the interior. The island of Hai-nan belongs to it, and there are very many smaller islands and shoals d by Google POLITICAL DIVISIONS. 63 along the coast. It is an extensive province, but not 80 populous in proportion to its extent as some of the others. The surface is estimated at about 90,000 square miles, and the population at rather more than, nineteen millions ; so that the ratio of the number of people to the surface is nearly the same as in Kwang-se. Indeed, the two provinces resemble each other not a little in their general characters ; the southern parts of both being low in the southern part ; but finely diversified by hills in the interior and toward the mountains.
