In every kingdom and Empire the life and repose of the sovereign is jealously guarded by all the precautions which the law can provide, and in eastern countries, where the dagger and poison are the constant terror of potentates, the preventive measures are always carefully devised.

In the code, pains and penalties of every intensity are laid down as the portion of those who directly or indirectly raise any suspicion of evil design against the throne.
Barbarous Punishments.
Any one passing without proper authoriz- ation through any of the gates of the For- bidden City incurs a hundred blows of the bamboo. This law is invariably enforced, and quite lately the Pekin Gazette announced the infliction of the penalty on a trespasser, and the degradation of the officer of the guard at the gate through which he had en- tered.
