It is in virtue of this dis- tinctly spiritual power of self-determination alone, that human History possesses moral character. For the self-determination of man is wide apart from the mere volition of the brute. That the brute creation possess a power of volition, we need not hesitate to admit ; if only we are careful to distinguish it from the voluntary nature of man. In the case of the brute, the outer world acts upon its instinctive impulses. These in- stinctive impulses regulate the judgme...nts of the brute's understanding ; and these judgments, in turn, are necessarily executed by a faculty, which, because it seizes the most 24 CHURCH HISTORY AS A SCIENCE. appropriate out of, perhaps, sev^eral means at hand, may not improperly be denominated a faculty of volition. But in all this movement there is no proper freedom. In all this there is no choice of end. The end of the whole process is fixed ; and fixed as necessarily as it is in inorganic matter. The difference between this mere brute volition and the voluntari- ness of man is as wide as the difference between heaven and earth.
