Judicial. It is impossible to describe a system of courts that apply to all the states; the courts tend, however, to approach a certain type. There is a Supreme Court in every state, the judges of which represent the entire state. It has jurisdiction over all cases tried in the lower courts, and has original jurisdiction in a very few cases. Its decisions are final on all points or cases con- nected with the state laws, but cases can be appealed to the United States courts if it contains any po...ints over which they have juris- diction. (For these cases see page 93). Below the Supreme Court are district, circuit or superior courts, which are equal in number to the districts into which a state is divided. In some counties where the volume of business is very large there are several judges in one county, in others where the volume of business is much smaller there may be one jud'ge for two or three counties. In the STATE GOVERNMENT. 143 latter case the judge goes around from one* county to another and holds sessions of court, the length of the session depending upon the amount of business.
