After waiting awhile I opened proceedings by showing my compass and papers, exhibiting authority from the great chief at Washington for what I was doing, and stated finally that I should continue to run the line. The chief then began to talk, and he talked both loud and fast. He said their line was away up north ; that I should not run the line where I was running... it; and he intimated by significant gestures with his hands in the vicinity of his top-knot, that if I attempted to do so there would be a rais- ing of scalp-locks. I believed this to be only bluster, aimed to scare us back, or make us pay something for going on. I told him if we were stopped or molested, the soldiers, of whom these Indians had a wholesome dread, would come down and wipe them out.
After spending an hour and a half with no results, Findlay and I took our departure, first expressing, as I left, my purpose to go on west, and the chief responding that if we did we would be struck by his young men.
