Although denied educational advantages in his boyhood, he had learned to read and was a tireless student with an un- flagging love for adventure. Before he reached manhood he joined the Cherokee Indians and lived with them for several years, but when yet in his teens he returned to Tennessee, taught a country school and was enabled to take a single session at Maryville Academy. Soon thereafter he enlisted in the regular army, served under Jackson in Indian warfare and suffered sev- eral severe wounds in a desperate engagement with the Creeks, one of which never entirely healed.
