Within its walls have worshipped five presidents of the United States, Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Tyler. The church derived its name from the parish, the latter probably named in honor of Governor Berkeley or the Lud- wells, who were from Bruton, Somerset county, England.
Thomjas Ludwell, Esq. , is buried at the north door of the church, and his epitaph testifies to the truth of this as his birth-place.
