.... Re- sistance to tempters, forethought of danger, need we not these for the safety of the soul, as much as for the health of the body ? There are strange and wild ideas in the minds of men with whom you come in contact, about the origin and conditions of thought. Probably there has never been an age so generally intelligent and at the same time so superficial as our own ; and the result of a widespread but imperfect culture is before us, in certain large and attractive systems, which represent not the solid and well-di- gested learning, but the boldness and irresponsibility of their apostles.
