This theory did not stop with the Greeks. In the hands of German philosophers like Kant and Hegel it was devel- oped and transformed until the notion that society, or the State, was an indispensable condition of the good life for the individual, grew into the conception that the individual owed a debt of gratitude to the State for performing this beneficial work of developing his personality. Further- more the State, being representative of all the individuals in it, came to be regarded as a ki...nd of glorified expression of their real selves, indissolubly linked with them by a mys- terious bond of community, and representative of all that was highest in their natures. In this conception a fresh ground was found for unquestioning obedience to the State, and the good life for the individual came to consist in sacrifice and discipline for the State's sake.
I have thought it desirable briefly to sketch the results arrived at by this school, in order to show that the intimacy of the bond between Ethics and Politics is established from whatever side we approach the subject, and so to avoid the accusation of undue trespassing.
