Even in the Haut Valais, however, cretins are at the present day less frequently seen than formerly, which I suspect depends upon their being kept more out of sight than upon any material diminu- tion of their number.
The scenery in several parts of the valley of the Rhone is highly interesting. Sion, the capital of the district, looks well from a distance, and its two castles, now in ruins, crowning commanding eminences, produce a good effect. The position of Martigny is likewise striking.
