DURING the reign of James the First, a great dearth of corn happened, which obliged his majesty to send for the celebrated Eastland Company of mer- chants. He told them, that to obviate the present scarcity, they must load their homeward-bound ships with corn ; which they promised to do, and so retired. One of the lords of the coun- cil, however, said to the king, that such a promise signified little, unless they agreed at what price it should be sold ; on which they were all called back, and acquainted that the king desired a more explicit answer.
