In the spring and summer of 1833, Webster made a tour of the West, where he was received with an enthusiastic acclaim seldom accorded a public man. It was not strange that he felt himself to be popular enough to be a candidate for president, but curiously enough he never even succeeded in securing the nomination to that office for which he was so well fitted.
