He was quite a guy.
William Byron Rumford, Legislator for Fair Employment, Fair Housing, and Public Health, Regional Oral History Office, University of California, Berkeley, 197A.
82 And he was very helpful to me. There's a book written about Rumford that describes me as one of his leading enemies, which I think is terribly unfair. 1 Because he and I always got along very well.
We clashed in '66 when reapportionment split the county into two separate districts. Before that they were at-large. I
... announced I was going to go for the Senate, and he announced he was going to go for the Senate. I don't remember the sequence, but for a while, it looked like there was going to be a head-on clash between the two of us.
Then the supreme court came in and said, "This isn't right. There's only two counties that have senators-at-large, that's San Francisco and Alameda. We're going to divide it. We're going to have two districts in Alameda County. " So then the question was, well, do I go for the southern district or the northern one?
