As a result of those combined efforts, the largest acreage of beets ever planted in the United States was seeded in 1917. Unfortunately, unfavorable weather and labor conditions prevailed in certain localities, and an abnormally high percentage of the fields were abandoned, however, the crop yielded approximately 750,000 tons of sugar, which tided over a period that other- wise would have bordered upon a sugar famine.
